Known as the Peaceful Side of the Smokies, Townsend is a small community at the western entrance to the national park. Tubing on the Little River, visiting Tuckaleechee Caverns, and exploring Cades Cove are the main draws. There are no traffic lights, no neon signs, and no crowds. Just mountains, rivers, and quiet.

Free and paid parking available throughout the area. During peak season (June-October and holidays), arrive early for the best spots. Consider parking once and exploring on foot when possible.
Most visitors arrive via I-40 from Knoxville (about 45 minutes). GPS works well for most destinations. Traffic can be heavy on weekends and holidays, especially on the main parkway.
Weekday mornings are the least crowded times to visit popular attractions. Many restaurants do not take reservations, so plan for waits during dinner hours. Cash is still accepted everywhere, but cards are preferred.
