Full Description
At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome (recently designated with its Cherokee name, Kuwohi) is both the park's and Tennessee's highest point. A steep half-mile paved trail leads from parking to the spiral observation tower offering 360-degree views—on clear days, visibility exceeds 100 miles. Temperatures run 10-20 degrees cooler than valley locations; bring layers. The area frequently experiences clouds (hence 'smoky' mountains), but clear conditions reward patience. The access road closes December through March. Located 7 miles off Newfound Gap Road, approximately 45 minutes from Gatlinburg.
